Rock4four: The 4/4 rockers

4.3 Big shout goin' out, to the DJs and Remixers

For the last year and a half, The Rock4four DJs have worked exceptionally hard, to make the project a success. Yuji Fuji tells me:

'Fox and the crew have spent so much time, finding the right tracks, for their mixes. And they've also been in their home studios, reworking tracks. Some of the results have been outstanding. One of my personal favorites is DJ Jiro:

'I've been so impressed with his remixes. So of course, we're keen, to have him DJ, again, when the beach party kicks off.'

At Yuji's suggestion, after listening to DJ Jiro's mix, on mp3, I mail the man himself, asking if he's up for it, when rock4four resumes on the beaches. DJ Jiro replies:

'I'm producing new U2 remix right now. If it is completed soon, I'll play it. I love Yokohama and Kamakura. I want to DJ in your event again. And I wait for news from you anytime.'

Also, international DJs caught the ear of the rock4four crew, and crowd, over the last year. Australia's Mick James, a remixer, and Sydney radio DJ, has reworked several tracks that have been huge favorites, with the Rock4four crowd:

Recently, I corresponded, with Mick, to congratulate him, on his excellent remixes, to tell him about the Rock4four parties, and to ask him if there's any chance well be seeing him behind the decks, at Kamakura beach. Enthusiastically, he responds:

'I was always big on mixing rock and dance, and rock remixes - so I'd certainly be interested! Also, More remixes are coming with Rock4four in mind'

Sadly, not all DJs I contacted seemed so enthusiastic. And of course, closer to home, there was Tommy Tokugawa.Tommy, who even before the advent of Rock4four, was a Kamakura beach bar owner, and DJ, requested, at the end of last summer, to take over the promotion of the beach parties, leaving the Yokohama events to Yuji Fuji. After Yuji, and most of the other DJs refused, relations went downhill. It's not clear how far advanced Tommy's plans to stage alternative beach parties had advanced, but he had stated categorically he wouldn't be DJing for Rock4four anymore.

The recent attempt to murder Tommy has of course reduced any possibility of alternative 4/4 rock parties, this year. But it has also brought a brand of publicity to the scene that Yuji Fuji and others would have wished to avoid. Yuji tells me:

'All we can do, this summer, is put on the best beach parties we possibly can. We'd resigned ourselves to going ahead, without Tommy's involvement or cooperation. All we can hope is that when he recovers, we can put it all behind us. But for now, we're being scrutinised by the police and the press.'Having said all that, we're ready. the DJ decks, the dance decks, the bars, and the speakers are all in place. Bar staff have been hired, and are ready. Most of last years DJs are gonna be back. And DJs from Australia, Europe, the Americas are gonna be over, as guests. All we need, for it to be a success, just like last year, is for people to show up. And I'm confident that they will.'
