Rock4four: The 4/4 rockers

4.6 Final preparations 3

So, around six, this evening, everything was declared ready. I plonked down on a plastic chair, and Yuji handed me a hurricane. "The only hurricanes I wanna see this summer are the cocktail ones!" he laughed.

Natalie berated me. "It's not even six!"

"It's a thankyou present from Yuji!", I protested. "I won't have any more, after this". Natalie smiled, and sat down next to me. "Okay, then, but I'll help you drink it!".

"No need!" said Yuji. "Here's one for you, too!" Natalie sighed, a resigned sigh.

So Yuji, Chi chan, Natalie and I, and a few of the workers sat there, with our well earned drinks, and looked out to sea. Everybody was knackered, so nobody said much, although Yuji said that Nat and Chinatsu had been great, setting the bar up, in a far more imaginative way than he could have thought himself. He also asked if they fancied working a few nights. Natalie said she'd like to, but had to take care of the Rock of Gib. Yuji said no prob, he could square it with Yuji Yoshida. So both Nat, and Chi chan happily agreed.

And so we all sat there, tired, and contended, looking oceanward, and wondering what excitement the summer would bring.

The first surprise was the rain - an absolute downpour which arrived at 6.30. We jumped in Yuji's car, and he dropped us off at the station. "Friday then!" he shouted, and his racing green mini roared off, through the deluge.

Rock4four: The 4/4 rockers

4.5 Final preparations 2

Arriving at the Great Buddha, we found Yuji praying.

"Didn't think he was the type", whispered Natalie.

"Everybody prays, when they need good luck" said Chi chan.
Yuji heard her. "That's right" he said "but I want it to be blessed. This summer, the bars, the parties, the DJs, you too..."

"We'd better get going, while the weather's dry" I suggested.

"Pray first. Please!" said Yuji.

We prayed, and then walked towards the beach. "Can we go and look at the rainy season flowers, at Hase Dera temple?" asked Chi chan.

Yuji suggested that the girls go to the temple, and then follow us to the beach. "We need to get cracking on the Rock bar" he stressed, to me.

When Yuji and I arrived at the beach, there were lots of workmen there, constructing bars, and platforms. The Rock bar looked about ready. "Why do you need me?" I asked.

"I want you to talk to some of the other bar owners. Some of them are wary, of being involved in Rock4four again, what with the Tommy Tokugawa busines and everything. I need you to go on a charm offensive. Tell them about your articles."

So, after spending the best part of three hours, talking to other bar owners, I managed to convince most of them that continuing to be associated with Rock4four was sensible commercially, and wouldn't damage their integrity. I went back to the Brighton Rock bar, to tell Yuji, but he wasn't there. He was at the water's edge, teaching Natalie and Chi chan surfing techniques. They were hanging on his every word. I sometimes thank the lord he's not looking for a girlfriend, because I wouldn't stand a chance against him.

"Nice to see I'm not the only one working hard" I whined. And where's Fox? Not up yet?"

"Ooh! Get her!" laughed Nat.

"He's at home, rehearsing his mixes" replied Yuji. "The tunes this summer will rip the roof off the place.... if the beach had a roof! Ha ha! He'll be down tomorrow and Thursday, to do sound checks, before the first party, on Friday night"

Yuji then picked up his board, and stomped into the water. "I'll show you how it's done" he shouted over his shoulder.

We sat there watching for about twenty minutes. He couldn't get anything going, although admittedly the surf was being temperamental. Finally, after a big wave caught him off guard, and threw him face first into the foam, he came stomping back ashore, noted our grins, walked straight past us, nonchalantly, and headed for the Rock bar. "That's the last time I'll get wiped out this summer" he growled.

4.4 Final preparations 1

This morning, while I was at a friend's flat, I got a call from Yuji:

"Can you come down the beach? No biggie, but the rainy weather has put us back a bit. The bars open tomorrow, and the Rock4four parties begin again this weekend. Just could do with extra hands and minds."

I could hardly refuse. "I'll be there just before lunch - can I bring Natalie?"

"Sure"

"And Chi chan too?" Natalie shouts into my receiver.

"Where are you now, Des?" asks Yuji.

"Just... in Yokohama. Do you want me to come or not?"

"Of course! Bring whoever you like. Let them know there's plenty of donkey work! Meet me at the Great Buddha at twelve."

Before I could ask why, he put the phone down. Natalie then asked "Can we bring Mary?"

"No!"

Rock4four: The 4/4 rockers

4.3 Big shout goin' out, to the DJs and Remixers

For the last year and a half, The Rock4four DJs have worked exceptionally hard, to make the project a success. Yuji Fuji tells me:

'Fox and the crew have spent so much time, finding the right tracks, for their mixes. And they've also been in their home studios, reworking tracks. Some of the results have been outstanding. One of my personal favorites is DJ Jiro:

'I've been so impressed with his remixes. So of course, we're keen, to have him DJ, again, when the beach party kicks off.'

At Yuji's suggestion, after listening to DJ Jiro's mix, on mp3, I mail the man himself, asking if he's up for it, when rock4four resumes on the beaches. DJ Jiro replies:

'I'm producing new U2 remix right now. If it is completed soon, I'll play it. I love Yokohama and Kamakura. I want to DJ in your event again. And I wait for news from you anytime.'

Also, international DJs caught the ear of the rock4four crew, and crowd, over the last year. Australia's Mick James, a remixer, and Sydney radio DJ, has reworked several tracks that have been huge favorites, with the Rock4four crowd:

Recently, I corresponded, with Mick, to congratulate him, on his excellent remixes, to tell him about the Rock4four parties, and to ask him if there's any chance well be seeing him behind the decks, at Kamakura beach. Enthusiastically, he responds:

'I was always big on mixing rock and dance, and rock remixes - so I'd certainly be interested! Also, More remixes are coming with Rock4four in mind'

Sadly, not all DJs I contacted seemed so enthusiastic. And of course, closer to home, there was Tommy Tokugawa.Tommy, who even before the advent of Rock4four, was a Kamakura beach bar owner, and DJ, requested, at the end of last summer, to take over the promotion of the beach parties, leaving the Yokohama events to Yuji Fuji. After Yuji, and most of the other DJs refused, relations went downhill. It's not clear how far advanced Tommy's plans to stage alternative beach parties had advanced, but he had stated categorically he wouldn't be DJing for Rock4four anymore.

The recent attempt to murder Tommy has of course reduced any possibility of alternative 4/4 rock parties, this year. But it has also brought a brand of publicity to the scene that Yuji Fuji and others would have wished to avoid. Yuji tells me:

'All we can do, this summer, is put on the best beach parties we possibly can. We'd resigned ourselves to going ahead, without Tommy's involvement or cooperation. All we can hope is that when he recovers, we can put it all behind us. But for now, we're being scrutinised by the police and the press.'Having said all that, we're ready. the DJ decks, the dance decks, the bars, and the speakers are all in place. Bar staff have been hired, and are ready. Most of last years DJs are gonna be back. And DJs from Australia, Europe, the Americas are gonna be over, as guests. All we need, for it to be a success, just like last year, is for people to show up. And I'm confident that they will.'

Rock4four: the 4/4 rockers

4.1 The Box car Kids

Daito Akahoshi is 23, and a trainee train driver. He lives in Nakano, Tokyo. A few days ago, I was introduced to him, and some of his friends, by Miki Ohara.

As it's the middle of the rainy season now, it is a very, very wet Tokyo afternoon, when we all meet, so Miki suggests we all decamp to her favourite south east Asian bar and grill. Miki is obviously well in, with the landlady, or Mama san, as such ladies are known. She's a nice, friendly Vietnamese lady, in her sixties. Miki asks if it's ok to play one of her Rock4four mix cds. Mama happily obliges, which creates a good vibe, in which to talk about Rock4four itself.

On the cd, 'suspicious minds' by Elvis, has been looped and mashed, with 'I am the resurrection' by the stone roses. "Well done, Miki!" I enthuse. "This mix is absolutely bangin'!"

"It's Fox on the mix", says Miki. "I don't do mash ups". My mix is on the next cd"

Well, as the Yokosuka crew would say 'you're oh for one, dude'.

OK, time for a different tack. I ask Daito how he got into Rock4four.

'Well, as you might know, alot of guys who drive cube cars rig them up, with the most powerful speakers, and accessories, even light shows. Starting in spring time, alot of us get together, at open spaces, like Yokohama bayside, and show off our rigs, and play the latest dance mixes.

'I was there, with my girlfriend, and a couple of friends, one evening last spring, in my Nissan cube, when a friend of mine, Junpei (he gestures across to the smiley, but quiet guy, sitting next to me, in a baystars outfit, and bling) shows up, in his fine tuned stepwagon, playing this fine rock mix. it caused a bit of a stir, at bayside, that night - usually, you can hear dance - euro and trance, mainly, but this mix was really getting people talking. Everybody wanted a copy'

According to Daito, Jun (Junpei) had stumbled across Rock4four, while on a day trip, to Enoshima, last summer. Massively impressed, with the mixing and party building skills of Fox, Yuji, Miki, and Tommy Tokugawa, Jun had asked Miki to send him some mp3s, which she duly did.

As well as really firing the imaginations, of Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama cube car kids, who upon hearing the mixes, began to hit the beaches in their droves, it also inspired Jun to promote a couple of big Rock4four club events, over the winter. Largely as a result of working together, to make these events a success, Jun (22, and Miki (30) are now an item. 'I'm the oldest cube kid in Japan!' laughs Miki.

'And the cutest!' beams Jun.

'He talks!' I gasp, feigning complete surprise, and fall off my chair. They laugh... with me, I'm sure...

I ask Daito if he thinks many cube car kids will be at the beaches, starting in about two weeks.

'The buzz started last summer. 4/4 rock really got people thinking. This music belongs to us, and the beaches. Not London, not L.A. Us! We started it, supported it, adapted it, and expanded it. 4/4 rock is a sound and a scene in itself now. Bands have adapted their style, and everything. It began in Yokohama, is successful in Tokyo, but is totally, and absolutely linked to Kamakura. I think most cube car kids will come... I think most armed services kids will... I think many students, many foreigners, many curious people too. But it won't last forever. We have to enjoy it while we can. Those beaches are gonna be absolutely packed, this summer!'

___________________________________________

I get a chance to speak to Miki, before I split, too. I ask her about her DJing, and what influences come through, in her sets.'
As I'm not using computers, mash ups, or things like that, I draw my influences, as a DJ, from the Northern soul DJs of england. You know, our new 4/4 album is called 'Twisted Wheel'.
'Why Northern soul? and what's the meaning of 'Twisted Wheel' as an album name?'
'Twisted wheel was the name of a famous Northern soul nightclub, in Manchester. Also, it evokes how my band has changed it's sound, to suit the rock4four scene. in terms of DJing, I'm not playing anything new, but like the Northern soul DJs, I look for a certain type of track, to suit my sets. I just look for tracks I think will fit. You don't hear extended mixes, in my sets, but I hope you'd agree that I keep the beat going, and the party pumping. Just like Northern soul DJs, I spend alot of my time looking for tracks, some of which were previously quite obscure, which I think will fit. But, in an attempt to find 'my stvle' I avoid remixes, dance mixes, extended mixes. I just play original recordings.'
I ask her if she's looking forward to the summer dance parties, especially in light of Tommy Tokugawa's misfortunes.
'I actually got along quite well with Tommy'. She sighs. 'I hope things work out, for all of us. He was always happy to recommend tracks to me, and I was grateful. I learned alot. So, this summer, I feel duty bound, to raise my game, as a DJ, out of respect for all I learned from him. I hope we'll get a chance to DJ together, again.'
Judging by her successes and plaudits, from last summer, Miki will be wowing the crowds again this year. Additionally, though, Yuji Fuji has been hard at work, to bring Japanese and international DJ talent to the beaches of Kamakura...

Rock4four: the 4/4 rockers

4.1 The Tommy Knocker

Several nights ago, Tommy Tokugawa was attacked, and is now lying in a hospital bed, critical. The story made the news, the following day, as Tommy, while probably not the most powerful or important underworld figure yet, is certainly the most high profile, as the oyabun, or de-facto ruler of his deceased father's crime syndicate, the Tokugawa Kai, 'one of Japan's biggest crime syndicates':

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokugawa-kai

Police have questioned dozens of people, about the attack, but no arrests have been made as yet. As Yuji Yoshida, co owner of the Rock of Gibraltar told me: 'If they arrested everyone in Yokohama, with a grudge, or a motive, or everyone who's got a bad word to say about Tommy Tokugawa, they'd have to use Yokohama baseball stadium as the holding tank. Plenty of people in this town think he's a complete scumbag. Including me.'
Yet, while Tommy fights for his life, at least one good point emerges - the nastiness, and bad feeling that was threatening the summer beach party season has, for now, dissipated. Yuji Fuji who, like many, was questioned, and later released without charge, said: 'there's no need, and no place, for violence, in Kanagawa nightlife. I'm genuinely sorry, to hear what happened, and my best wishes go to Tommy and his family. I've spoken to Tommy's brother, Terry, and given him my condolences. I want to draw a line under any bad feeling that existed before, because what has happened to Tommy this week is way, way out of line.'
While the sincerity of his public sentiment seems genuine, Yuji has made the most of his newfound opportunity, and lack of distraction, in laying the final plans of Rock4four 2009. the materials for the bars, stages and dance floors have been ordered and are waiting at the beach, and the DJs and bar staff are booked too - only the sound checks and drink orders remain on the 'to do' list.

My latest reviews

Hi everyone,

Hope you're enjoying the rainy season here, in Japan. The other night, I was watching the TV weather news, and Michiko Ichikawa said that the rainy season was coming. So I decided to go to the 100 yen shop, to buy a raincoat.

And the rainy season came, while I was on my way to the 100 yen shop...

In addition to catching pneumonia, my other rainy season hobby is making Umeshu - plum liquor. Delicious, and highly recommended.

Also, this week, I wrote a review, of Fujisawa's top chill-out night - Sirocco:

You can find my review here, at Seek Japan:

And I reviewed Nahoko Fujimoto's art installations, in Omotesando too:

All the best.

Rock4four: Preparing for Summer

3.4 Terrible Tommy Tokugawa

The twenty first century skyline comes into view, as we sail back up towards the Bay Bridge, and Minato Mirai, Yokohama's new high rise development, at the far end of the harbour. I ask Kikuchi san who he thinks might be responsible for smashing up the Kamakura Rock Bar.

"I'm pretty sure I know who's responsible" he says, grimly....."Terrible Tommy Tokugawa"

"Who????" I guffaw. "Sounds like a seventies pro wrestler." Kikuchi san is not amused by my glibness, so I pull myself together, and try to look serious.

"Tommy Tokugawa was one of the DJ's at Rock4four last summer" continues Kikuchi san. A bad, bad boy. Some nasty stuff has been associated with him. He, and his brother, Terry inherited a bar and club empire from their father, who died last year. Tommy has been DJing at clubs in Yokohama since he was about fifteen, because of who his father was. That isn't to say he isn't a good DJ - in fact, he's a FANTASTIC DJ. A real party wizard. He plays boogie tracks mainly, and it works a treat. Girls love him, and guys want to be him. For the closing beach party, at the end of last summer, there must have been two thousand people there. And they were there to see Tommy. Fox White's really good, Miki Chan is a wonderful DJ too, but for stirring up a party, and for sheer popularity, Tommy Togugawa is out of reach."

"So why do you think he smashed the Rock Bar?" I ask. Kikuchi san's theory doesn't seem to make sense to me.

"Tommy thinks he doesn't need Rock4four, any more" says Kikuchi san. "At the end of last summer, he told Yuji that he was taking over. Yuji and the DJ's resisted, so Tommy walked out. It was pretty acrimonious, which is worrying, because people who've crossed The Tokugawa boys before, have literally been shipped out. Tommy and Terry are well in, with the boys who work the docks.

"Yuji rode his luck though, as usual, because he knew that Tommy knows that he and Fox were in with the US military kids, and foreign bar owners, like Neil at the Rock of Gib. Mixing it with unknowns isn't something Tommy is ready to do yet. He might be psychotic, but he's anything but stupid. So... he's biding his time. And with Neil's passing, the power balance shifts, just a little. Tommy knows it's just a case of biding his time. We're patient, in Japan, and the Tokugawas are renowned for playing the waiting game. And in the meantime, he's setting up his own nights on the beach this summer. He'll be running his own show, which is what he wants, but of course, Rock4four is now a rival. Tommy doesn't like rivals."

I wonder if the trip to Kamakura on Monday is still on. So, when we disembark, beneath landmark tower, we head back to the Yokohama Rock Bar, and I ask Yuji directly.

"DAMN right Kamakura is still on" he growls, defiantly. "I'm gonna put on the best parties this country's ever seen, and no stinking crook is gonna stop me. And I want YOU (he points at me) to be there, to tell the world!"

"That's the spirit!" I shout. And I celebrate with a Midori and Soda. GULP!

Review of Fatboy Slim at Hakkeijima

Hi there,

You can read my article, on last weekends's terrific Big beach Festival, at Seek Japan

All the best, and have a great weekend.

Des.

FATBOY SLIM, at Hakkeijima:

Rock4four: Preparing for Summer

3.3 Around Yokohama in Eighty Minutes.

I had a most pleasant day, today, travelling around Yokohama's river network, by private pleasure boat, with friends.

The network of Rivers, joined together in the days of the Shoguns takes us into the mouth of the Oka River, beneath the skyscrapers of Minato Mirai, and inland for a couple of miles. Earlier in the spring the Oka river is lined with thousands of pink cherry blossom trees. Now though, as the heat of summer is bearing down, I prefer the Nakamura river, which spurs eastwards from the Oka, and spits us out into Tokyo Bay. Along the Nakamura and Hori rivers, willows spill down towards the water, and provide a refreshing scene. We enjoyed the circuit so much, we had a tea break, and did it again!

Of course any trip can be maked or breaked by the company you travel with. In today's case, I couldn't have asked for a cooler bunch of people, to spend a day on the river with. Natalie, the new manageress at the Rock of Gibraltar invited me along, and she's loving getting to know the city, in such a relaxed, and refreshing way. Taka, a Japanese Canadian karate instructor, used to be a Mountie, in Alberta, and there's never any shortage of great stories, from him.

Another one of my fellow travellers was Kikuchi san, a gay, middle aged man, who manages one of Yuji's bars, and in fact gets behind the turntables at the Rock4four events, from time to time.

Kikuchi san is a veritable history book, when it comes to club culture, having lived in New York, for ten years, from the late 70's:

"I went to, or worked the bar, at all the top spots, Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Danceteria, Zanzibar. Served drinks to Madonna once. Total highlight. I loved those years."

"How does Rock4four rate?"

" Oh, don't! PLEEEEASE!!!" He screams, wafting me away. "No, 4/4's good, but the reason I DJ sometimes is because I mentioned to Yuji that DJ's like Tony Humphries often played rock tracks, in Zanzibar, so I was offered a chance to DJ. Technically though, I can't cut it, but Miki (Ohara) chan was really interested in playing that kind of stuff. She's a wizard on the turntables, so I like to get in there with her sometimes, and suggest tracks."

"Like?"

"Oh you know, the Police, Blondie, the Clash. I even..."

His phone rings. It's Yuji. A long conversation ensues, so I chat with my friends, and we enjoy watching the sunset, over the Nakamura river and Oka river basins, as the boat once again heads into Tokyo Bay.

Mr Kikuchi hangs up. "We've got a problem. Yuji says the Kamakura Rock bar has been trashed. He needs me back at the Yokohama Rock bar."

"Shit! Mind if I tag along?" I ask.

Kikuchi san nods, solemly. I'm not sure if he means yes, or no.

A lovely day ends, abruptly, and emphatically, and the boat follows the coastline north back to Yokohama Bay.

Rock4four: Preparing for Summer

3.2 Perspiring and aspiring

Last Sunday morning, once again, I dropped by to see Yuji and Fox. Yuji was on the phone, to a Kamakura bar owner, trying to make the final arrangements for this summer's Rock4four beach parties. So I took the opportunity to chat with Fox.

I asked him what has influenced and inspired him the most."Definitely Fatboy Slim" comes the answer. "I'm from brighton, so it makes me doubly proud that someone who lives there has chosen to stay there. I mean, you look at the Beatles, or Oasis, who split to London, as soon as they're successful, and on the other hand you look at acts like New Order, or Fatboy Slim, who stay true to their roots. So I'm most inspired by them, because they stay where they belong, and give something back to their communities", enthuses the Brightonian expat, as we look over his adopted home of Yokohama, from the balcony of his luxury apartment.

I am about to query what he's just said, when Yuji finishes his phone conversation, and shouts over:

"Right. It's pretty much sorted out now. but I've just gotta go down to Kamakura on monday, to finalise one or two things. So if either of you two feel like a trip to the beach..."

Nah", replies fox. "I'll see enough of the place over the next couple of months. and I'm a bit behind schedule, with a couple of rock tracks, that I'm working on. Why not take Des?"

"How about it, then?" Yuji asks me.

"Sounds great" I reply. "Oh, wait, I've got a friend, who's new in town, who I promised to show around"

"Well, bring them too", insists Yuji.

"Fantastic idea. I'm sure they'll love it. Thanks"

"Sorted, then", says Yuji.

Rock4four: Preparing for Summer

3.1 Live and let jive

One of the positive byproducts of the 4/4 rock scene, in Yokohama last winter, was the interest in English bars, and rock bars, around Noge, and Kannai, the old port areas. Business, by all accounts was great, and helped many bars through a potentially sticky patch. Ocean traffic into Yokohama port has been down by a third this year, but, thanks to Rock4four, the inevitable impact was softened, in regard to portside nightlife. Noge and Kannai remained lively, as kids from all over the city poured in, as well as kids from Tokyo, Kawasaki and Shonan too.

Another positive byproduct has been the bands who've performed at Rock4four related events. Miki Ohara might sound Irish at first listen, but she's Yokohama born and bred - as well as being a friend of Yuji Fuji's, she's a dj with the Rock4four sound system, a promoter, and also the bassist and lead singer with Yokohama band Keihin Space. Along with several other bands, Keihin Space found their sound was perfect, for the Rock4four ethos, and vibe:

"In fact, we added a fifth member - a dj" she recalls. "Before that, we were a more traditional rock outfit, although of course, we encouraged dancing. But the punky, moshy side of our sound has been toned down, now, and the dj is also like a conductor. Our drummer plays to the djs' beat and the rest of us just follow."

"Has it stifled your range, creativity, or appeal?"

"No, no, not at all. We still have a range of tempos. but our mindset has changed. we used to play to a crowd... a moshpit. Now we play to a dancefloor. and commercially, and creatively, we are way ahead of where we were 12 months ago. Also our first 4/4 album is out soon."
Miki's DJ style differs from others in the posse, for example Fox White. Whereas Fox often mashes up, and loops beats, to increase the mixability, Miki, although also a beatmixer, tends to use tracks that are already mixable, and dancefloor friendly:
"Tracks like Scarlet Fantastic, Love Rollercoaster, and Hella Good are ready for the floor. All I have to do, is whack 'em together, live, in the mix. Raw, rough, yet keeping their integrity. Also, I go for tracks with female vocals. And the tracks I play as a DJ have had an effect on the music we make - dancey, yet focussed on vocals. That's the Keihin Space sound, now."
Featured tracks:
Scarlet Fantastic - No Memory
No Doubt - Hella Good
RHCP - Love Rollercoaster
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
Boom Boom Satellites - Pill
